I understand the concept of calling Motorhead 'Rock N' Roll', and I know why Lemmy prefers the term as it's simple and to the point, but they have done songs that do cross into the Heavy Metal sound, particularly with more recent albums (We Are Motorhead being one very good example). It's easy to see why to some people that they do fit that category, I mean a song like 'Voices from the War', for example, hardly compares to 'Somethin' Else' by Eddie Cochran, and to draw comparisons is daft, frankly.

What genre title Motorhead go under is personal choice, some say Rock, some Metal, but in the end it doesn't really matter as long as there's music to enjoy. The music is what matters, genres and sub-genres are just words and titles used to describe what a band sounds like or "Where they fit in".

I disagree and you know why? Rock n roll genre have its own evolution, there is no first clean rnr from 1955 anymore. The world is yours album is rock n roll from 2010 and not from 1955! About songs, yeah, you can find some metal songs BUT you can find and some blues songs like: Whorehouse blues, You better run, Treat me nice etc etc... Is Motorhead because of that a blues band? You see, you can't look on the band on that way. Most of songs are rnr, hard rock style.. I mean, "hard rock" is just name for one period in Rock n roll genre. Mentally rnr bands and metal bands are very different. When you will hear that Metallica plays songs like Going to Brazil, Angel city, Dont waste your time, Don't lie to me etc etc... Never! You can't have in 2012 pure rnr like in 1955. That's evolution. But if you hear Miles Davis from 80's and his work from 50's it is so different but both is Jazz. The same thing is with Motorhead, The world is yours is Rock n roll genre from 2010, that's how rnr sounds in 2010. That's not hard to understand.

Here is something that I found here one year ago, it is proof against those who think that Lemmy insist on this "Motorhead is rnr" just because it is simple to explain Motorhead music.

Lemmy: Published: Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011 - 12:00 am | Page 2I

"When you play rock 'n' roll, you have to be loud, don't you?
Otherwise, what's the point? You may as well be playing folk music,"
said Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, who's proud of the band's sonic blast.
He's 65 years of age, has been the head of the band for 36 years,
and he hears just fine. His band touts itself as the "loudest, coolest and
most ironic rock 'n' roll lifestyle around," and its new album,
"The Wörld Is Your" comes out in two weeks. Motörhead's last album,
"Motörizer," broke all the group's sales records.
"The music is exactly what you'd expect. We're pretty much set in our
ways," Kilmister said. "It's straight-ahead rock 'n' roll. It is not heavy metal.
People call us a heavy-metal band. We are not heavy metal.
We are heavy rock. We were rocking way before heavy metal,
way before punk. It's what we've been doing for 36 years, and
I've never tired of it."

If Lemmy thinks that Motorhead is metal than he would say "Motorhead is metal" but no, he insist that Motorhead is rnr. SO he is not saying that just to make simple definition what Motorhead is, he really say: Motorhead is rnr!

Very true Matt, they do have that in common with rock n roll, you can tell by the playing alone, the influences on the band, from Little Richard to the Ramones. Well i remember Matt you can take any of several punk bands of the 1970s and im sure they will tell you that the band were a big influence. You only have to look at some of the bands supporting on the tours to see some of it. laugh A lot of bands have stated how Motorhead have influenced them and rightly so and to be honest the list is endless from metal to punk. smile

Rock n Roll is the grandad of rock, hard rock, blues rock, heavy metal, punk rock or whatever. It's all fucking rock n roll. Too many pigeon holes for me. The world has become obsessed with trying to categorize every slight variation and nuance within music. I've always interpreted Lemmy's statement that they're rnr not hm as him saying 'it's all just rnr'. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't give a shit. I only need 2 categories for music personally. Stuff I like and the everything else.

It's not all rnr and Lemmy is not saying that. Read my post above what he say about rnr and metal. My two posts above. My opinion that songs like going to brazil, angel city, etc are not the same like Cannibal Corpse, or Sepultura, or Panthera, or Metallica etc... Read above posts.

Hey everyone at the end of the day we all know it's ROCK N ROLL, who gives a fuck, that shit is for fuckers who sit at desks and try and think of a new tag to describe music, at the end of the day we all know were our band deserve to be with their music, and that particular song we all voted for set the standard for a lot of stuff out there however different it sounds today. It was probably easy for Loudwire to put it under the banner of metal because lets be honest it encompasses a hell of a lot of stuff from then and now, I said said i'd be dissapointed if AOS didn't get into the top 4 ! Job done as far as I'm concerned !!

I don't give a damn about that kind of rankings or top 10 or top-whatever... That's why I didn't vote at this poll.

And speaking of categorizations... well, Lard here wrote exactly what I think.
