Anyone know why Lemmy has suddenly switched to Gibson SG bass in place of his usual Rickys?

Quite strange to see him playing an SG after all these years on the vid on youtube.

I don't like it much but then I guess Lem has used Rickenbacker for so long now that he fancied a change.

Perhaps his Rick had to be serviced or was delayed at an airport or border crossing? Although I don't play bass I know that Ricks (even their guitars) feel very different than the other brands. I wanted to get a Rick guitar but the neck was too narrow for me. It wouldn't be easy to switch from playing a Rick for decades to another brand.

I know's probably silly to think like this, but Lemmy and Ricky is just such an iconic image,an SG just didn't seem right.

I wonder how he handles the sound.
The SGs are pretty "booooomy", that does not fit Lemmys sound at all.

It is an Longscale SG. It`s not that boomy. And his LK Ricks have Thunderbird PUs in Bridge Position anyway. smile

it wasn't lems trademark sound - didn't sound right at all. not enough ring to the sound. (to be fair, the sound at Wolves was shit I thought.)
You could see a ricky head behind the amps at Wolves.

Her is a vid with quite good quality. I think it the bass sounds ok. Maybe not 100% aggressive like usual.

In the early days he had a Thunderbucker in the neck position. But nowadays Rickenbacker makes very decent Humbuckers (HB-1) and that is what they installed in Lemmy's signature Rickenbacker.

I once read Geddy Lee from Rush stopped playing Ricks because it became painful for his arm or hand. In an interview he said he might give them another try in the future (or during the last tour).

Not 100% sure but think Lemmy was using one his rickenbackers for Newcastle sound check. The photo on twitter was a bit small to be sure.

as far as I know he only used it for this gig, it did look weird but didnt sound particularly different. Yes i saw the headstock of a Rick behind the amps too.
I remember we went to Graz to see them and the gig got cancelled right at the last minute coz Lem was ill, There was a studio upstairs at the venue and Phil and Mikkey recorded the backing track for The Game instead. Phil played the bass and tried playing the Rick and hated it, so borrowed a Fender from the support band.
