The Weber Attenuators aren't that great. They really change the sound when you use very low volume compared to some of the newer ones.

The Phantom Attenuator is supposed to currently be the best but I wouldn't know as they have some people waiting over a year to get theirs due to the demand and the price is about $1,000. There's no way that I'd pay (I think they ask for half the money for a deposit) and then wait for over a year while the company solves their issues with parts suppliers etc.

The Alex Attenuator is pretty good. It's not my favorite though. When I have to play at bedroom levels because I often play when everyone is sleeping, I use the Ho Attenuator. Some people don't like the Ho because it puts a big load on the amp's tubes. I haven't had a problem with mine.

There are better ones out these these days probably but for now I'm good.

You have to make sure you get an attenuator that can handle all the volume coming out of the amp.

When a guitar amp (for example) is rated at 100 Watts, that means 100 Watts of clean signal. Once you turn up a 100 watt amp to the point where it is distorting, it can be actually putting out 200 watts.

I don't have any experience with using an attenuator for bass though.

I just did a quick search on youtube and found this:

Which Weber's are you talking about? The one's with just a resistor, or the ones with a speaker motor? Anyway; I like my Weber Mass 100 very much for my Bassman 50.

yes, it's the MF280L. Wasn't easy to get and the price was over the top.
Anyway, I can't recommend the Weber. I had one (Note: It was never used with the 1992Lem!) and I was never happy. Whenever I had found a reasonable sound setting, the smallest change of the amp settings ruined it mad

I have one of those and I'm VERY happy with it! But I don't need to play at very low volumes, I've bought my own house last year and don't have to care about neighbours grin

After listening for over 30 years, searching and waiting for alternatives, I understood that there will be no other band like Motörhead. Never.

There can be some serious and sometimes nasty debates on Attenuators on the Gear Page Forum.

Since I'm happy with my attenuators I no longer read about them. I post about guitar stuff generally on there.

I use my Weber's line out to go directly to the home stereo (with my bassman 50). I do not even have a speaker plugged in so I expect it to sound different than with a speaker. I must say that I read a lot of positive things about these Weber's with a speaker motor in them. And most important: I am happy with it. smile

@Iron Fist: Do you happen to know the differences between an MF280 and a MF280L cab (apart from cosmetics/looks)? What ohmage does your MF280L has?

The MF-280 is a guitar cab! You'll blow it to pieces when playing bass over it smile
The MF-280L has 8 Ohms (which is a bit surprising, but that's the way it is).

Do I? It is supposed to be a guitar cab for nu metal bands with 7 string guitars with lots of lows and as such could be a good complement to the 1979L (4 x 15") cab.

Well it is not a suprise to me. But that is because I was surprised to see the 1979L 4 x 15" is 8 ohm. ;-) Now it makes perfectly sense.

Here's another link with a couple of theories about what he may have used to obtain his sound back in the Hawkwind days amp-wise.

Yeah, that's me theorizing there! cool

Yeah, I've heard that story as well -- and while it may not be (wholly) untrue, the fact (as you refer to in your previous post) that Murder One was made in 1976 means that Lemmy must have acquired it, at least, after he left Hawkwind (in 1975). Perhaps one or both of "No Remorse" or "Killer" were holdovers from the Hawkwind days?

Of course, there's no particular reason a 1992-model Marshall Super Bass from '72 or '73 would necessarily be so much different from one from '76.

Lemmy's tone, on the other hand, certainly sounds different on, say, Space Ritual as compared to Bomber! grin It might be that he's just dialed up the gain (and perhaps increasingly emphasized the mids and treble) on the 1992-model Super Bass amps, or possibly he once-upon-a-time had older 1959 model JTM100 Super Lead amps that were less gainy and aggressive.

Those are my two theories! At the moment ... I kinda suspect he did indeed use more or less the same kind of 1992-model Super Basses in the HW days, just with perhaps less gain, etc. But who knows.

Anyone know what amp the Man is plugged into in the picture below? Not a Marshall .... Looks kinda like a Fender Bassman sorta head, but I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable in this area. confused

On the other hand, the "Silver Machine" video on YouTube, etc. clearly shows a Marshall head of some kind. (Though in that video, Lemmy actually seems to be standing in front of Dave Brock's HiWatt, while Lemmy's Marshall seems to be further over behind the drummer).

It is a Selmer. Lemmy played Selmer amps for a while while in Hawkwind.
