Everyone knows that Lemmy was once a roadie on a 1967 UK package tour involving the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

However, I watched the documentary "Jimmy Hendrix - The Guitar Hero" which features many famous musicians recalling their memories of Hendrix back in the day. Lemmy has a fair bit of screen time and right at the end, he claims that he had arranged to audition for the bass slot in Jimi's band, 2 days before Hendrix died.

Surely Lem was pulling our legs here? After all, Jimi died in 1970 and Lemmy has always said he had never played bass before upon joining Hawkwind in 1971.

Very unlikely as he never thought about playing bass until Hawkwind

Yes, but if the bass slot with Hendrix opened up, I'm sure that any guitarist who had an "in" with Jimi would try to audition for bass, even if they had to fudge it!

Remember Lemmy only got into Hawkwind because when Dave Brock if anyone played bass Dik Mik said that Lemmy did. Lemmy is said to have commented that Dik Mik was a cunt for saying so! Nil Turner then asked Lemmy to make noises in E... The rest is history. It is entirely possible Lemmy could have been up for the audition with Hendrix, particularly as he was known to him for scoring acid just three years before while Lemmy roadies for him. Noel Redding was chosen for his look rather than his bass-playing ability - and, just like Lemmy had been an average guitarist before, not a bassist. Someone should photoshop some period pictures to see what this collaboration. One thing is for, if Hendrix had lived and Lemmy had been in - Hendrix would not have pursued the jazz direction he was leaning towards at the time.

Excuse typos. Tapping in on an iPod touch. Bugger. Would love to imagine what Lemmy would have played with Hendrix. Mitch Mitchell could have been back with them too. Think they may have tried Good Golly Miss Molly, the Little Richard standard but rocked it up as there was a rock'n'roll revival at the time with a London gig in 1972 with the likes of Chuck Berry et al.
