Amp questions .... smile

So, the Marshall signature model 1992LEM was itself fashioned after Murder One, a 1976-vintage 100w Super Bass. Clearly, he got this after being fired from Hawkwind (in 1975). Still, squinting at old photos/videos of Hawkwind suggest he was using Marshall heads during his tenure there, and a press release from UA from around the time of Space Ritual identifies Lemmy as using a "Marshall 100 watt amp" ...

But what kind? smile

Some kind of Super Bass head seems probable, but one supposes Lemmy might have used whatever could be scrounged up at the time. More like a Plexi-era (i.e. made before Lemmy joined HW) or more like a Metal-Panel-era (similar to "Murder One", made during or just prior to Lemmy's HW days)?

For comparison, I gather John Entwistle had been using Marshall 1959 JTM100 Super Leads with The Who back in the '67-'68 timeframe, and of course Lemmy is a big ol' Entwistle fan from what I can tell, and so he might have also used Marshall heads from that period -- though, on the other hand, Lemmy might have just used whatever Marshall was most readily on offer new, which in, say, '72-'73 would have been a "Metal Panel" Super Bass of some sort anyway.

Any thoughts? smile

Carlaz, the above link explains the Motorhead era 1976 RED MARSHALL HEAD. Some great info and pics. Essential reading - would look nice printed out in colour in a frame...

Here's another link with a couple of theories about what he may have used to obtain his sound back in the Hawkwind days amp-wise. However, I remember asking him a similar question back in 1984 and he said he used the same heads he'd used in Hawkwind, stolen back from Hawkwind just after he'd been fired from them in front of the hopping-mad 'drum empire'! He then painted over them in matt black and gave a Sounds interview to Geoff Barton, announcing, in a steal from Dr. Hook, 'If this band moved in next door to you, your lawn would die'. I believe Motorhead have been far more effective than weedkiller ever since...

Sorry, but I have to share this. I just bought this amp + cab. I think I have not been so excited about gear since I've bought my first Rickenbacker more than 20 years ago. smile

Have you tried the Lemmy settings (in the Marshall PDF) yet?

Thanx Nigel, and yes that is an ovedrive pedal (EBS Multidrive). I can not have Motorhead stage volumes at home unfortunately. ;-)

I did try the Lemmy settings, but they are not of much use at volume 0.5. I will take the amp/cab to next rehearsal and will try there.

get yourself a power soak!

You own the 4x15, as it seems. Hmm, is that really working?
I have the same amp with the 4x12 cab. Lemmy plays that way in studio recordings and (sometimes) on stage. The show with Metallica is an example.

I wonder if the 4x15 is able to produce the high-mids which are the "Lemmy signature sound", so too speak.

After listening for over 30 years, searching and waiting for alternatives, I understood that there will be no other band like Motörhead. Never.

You have the MF280L cab Iron Fist?
A Weber Attenuator is high on my wish list. I already have one for my Fender Bassman 50, but that one is not capable of taming 100 Marshall watt's. ;-)

If the 4 x 15" fits in my guitarists car I'm gonna find out tomorrow what it sounds like at band rehearsal.
