A mate has a question regards Motorhead support bands if anyone can help.

He saw Motorhead in the late 70's and early 80's and says Saxon supported one gig and Girlschool the other. He reckons Saxon was '79, which ties in with the Bomber Tour, but is unsure what year Girlschool supported. All he remembers is it was at The Hammy and he thinks it was 1980. Another lad says Girlschool supported on the Overkill Tour, in early '79 and a band called Weapon covered support duty in 1980. He definitely wasn't at the Rockstage gig in nottingham where Girlschool supported.

Can anyone shed any light on whether Girlschool supported in 1980 or '81 at the Hammy? Cheers in advance

If memory serves me right, I think Girlschool supported on the Overkill tour. Saxon and Girlschool were both supporting on the Bomber tour. Girlshool first than Saxon.

Girlschool supported also in 1981 during the ace of spades tour. I saw them in France in march '81. It was my first MH show.

Lemmy often wore a Motorhead with Girlschool shirt during the Ace of spades tour.
I got to see girlschool in the mid 80's when they opened up for Deep Purple. That was somewhat ill planned as Girlschool didn't do to well with the Deep Purple audience. They didn't do an encore witch would have likely been the Race With the Devil song (my favorite song by them - I love that riff.) One of the girls died which is sad.

Girls still play now, and always good value. The most dodgy support tour i saw them on was when they opened for gary glitter, bizarre night, luckily i was pissed. Ran into a guy with a "Hit and Run " tour shirt on in my local recently, he was surprised to know they were still going. Kelly Johnson was a very sad loss

Very sad indeed. I quite like their rerecorded version of Hit and Run, but you can't beat the original. I normally don't like female vocalists but the first 2 or 3 Girlschool albums are superb.

As for Gary Glitter, you were lucky that Girlschool opened for him. When I saw him it was the Village People, although I didn't actually see him in the end. After waiting for him to come on for ages the crowd were informed he had injured his arm and wouldn't play. We couldn't make the rescheduled gig, and got a refund. So basically we drove to London for a free 40 minute Village People gig. Not my proudest gig going moment blush
